Withlacoochee State Forest
The 50 Thousand acres that make up the Withlacoochee State Forest's Citrus Tract dominate the elevated Central Ridge of Citrus County. It is one massive forest of diverse eco-tones critical to transiting and resident birds. None is of more interest than the rare Red-cockaded Woodpecker that requires the mature Long-Leaf Pine Forests that once dominated the Southeastern United States for nesting. Nesting trees in the Tillis Hills Camping Area off of West Stage Coach Trail between Floral City and Homosassa are marked so its "easy" for the patient birder to wait and see.
