A short drive away is the quaint fishing village of Old Homosassa, famous for its Monkey Island and the Homosassa Springs Wildlife Park—Florida's most popular state park. Both cities are just 10 minutes apart and offer a plethora of fresh seafood restaurants with picturesque water views. In the summer, the West side shines with scalloping season, inviting visitors to catch their own dinner and have it cooked at local restaurants.
East Side Treasures
A quick trip across Citrus County transports travelers to the historic towns of Inverness and Floral City. West Side – Crystal River & Homosassa
Three Sisters Springs Crystal River Shuttle – Crystal River
The Three Sisters Springs Crystal River Shuttle is the premier way to explore this charming vintage fishing village. Enjoy a ride to Three Sisters Springs Boardwalk and three other essential stops: the USFWS Visitor Center, with interactive exhibits, and a lovely gift shop, beautiful Hunter Springs Park, along with Crystal River’s peaceful Town Square and Citrus Ave., which offers shopping, dining, and vibrant murals. The shuttle service operates approximately every 20 to 30 minutes, allowing visitors to get on and off the shuttle as they wish. Service runs from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., with the last admission at 3:30 p.m. Wristbands are required, and tickets can be purchased at 917 Three Sisters Springs Trail, Crystal River, FL 34429. Parking is free.
Homosassa Springs State Wildlife Park – Homosassa
As one of Florida's most popular parks, Homosassa Springs State Wildlife Park is a must-see. Built over the springs, it’s a winter haven for manatees visible from the boardwalk. The park also features a zoo with brown bears, alligators, flamingos, and Lu, the oldest hippo in North America. The park’s fishbowl, a subterranean aquarium, offers views of manatees, (year round) fish, and turtles in their natural habitat. A beautiful boat ride on Pepper Creek is also available for a small fee.
Monkey Island in Homosassa
Don't miss Monkey Island, a unique iconic attraction, which is home to real live spider monkeys. Both the Monkey Island Riverside Resort and the adjacent Monkey Bar offer fantastic views of the island and its lively inhabitants. Check with local tour companies in the area that offer river tours that include a boat ride around the island which provides a closer look at its energetic residents.
Crystal River Archaeological State Park
This hidden gem is a National Historic Pre-Columbian Landmark site featuring an indigenous museum, burial mounds, and the highest point on Crystal River with spectacular views. The park also offers hiking trails, picnic tables, and a peaceful, picturesque setting.
Kayak the Chassahowitzka River – Homosassa
For an adventurous escape, while visiting Citrus County, kayak the untamed Chassahowitzka River. Just a short paddle away is Seven Sisters Springs, a breathtaking spring and underwater cave system. Further down the river is “The Crack,” a secluded sulfur spring accessible only by paddle craft. Whether exploring Seven Sisters Springs or venturing to The Crack, this is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Guided tours and a public kayak launch can be found at Chassahowitzka River Campground. Call in advance for weather conditions, reservations, and fees.
East Side – Inverness & Floral City
Ride the Withlacoochee Trail from Inverness to Floral City or Vice Versa
Hop on a bike or e-bike from one of the numerous rentals and traverse the scenic Withlacoochee Trail, formerly old train tracks cutting across Citrus County. Start the journey at the Withlacoochee Trailhead at Liberty Park. This 14-mile roundtrip offers a charming ride to Floral City or back to Inverness, with a recommended stop at Fort Cooper State Park for picturesque lake views and intriguing history.
Historic Downtown Inverness
Downtown Inverness is a delightful mix of charm and history. Begin the exploration at the impressive 1912 Old Courthouse, then cross the street to the Valerie Theatre, which features live performances throughout the year. The historic downtown is adorned with old oak trees, shops, dining spots, colorful murals, antique stores, serene lakes, and ice cream shops, promising timeless memories.
Avenue of the Oaks – Floral City
Founded in the 1880s by a Civil War veteran, downtown Floral City still exudes a timeless charm. The Avenue of the Oaks, with its rows of ancient oak trees, offers a stunning driving experience. The Withlacoochee Trail runs through Floral City, and the historic town also boasts unique restaurants that complete this enchanting visit. In the wintertime, don't miss the 1930 fruit stand Ferris Farms.
Old Courthouse Museum – Inverness
This majestic 1912 Old Courthouse and Heritage Museum, rich in local, indigenous, and Elvis history, is a popular stop. The museum features fascinating temporary exhibits along with permanent displays. This key landmark of Inverness was preserved thanks to Elvis Presley filming “Follow That Dream” here in 1961. Liberty Park & Cooter Pond - Inverness
Inverness, surrounded by the Apopka chain of lakes and situated on the banks of Lake Henderson, offers stunning views. A short walk from downtown takes visitors to Liberty Park, with its boardwalk over Lake Henderson – perfect for sunset views. Cooter Pond also features a lovely boardwalk, complete with gazebos, picnic tables, and park benches for a relaxing visit.
