Among the endless miles of backcountry trails in the Withlacoochee State Forest are 43 miles of the Florida Trail (FT). Look for the FT's blue blazes. The size and diversity of Withlacoochee State Forest provides visitors with a variety of natural communities, wildlife and recreation activities. Wildlife is abundant and there are a number of species that are listed as endangered, threatened or species of special concern. Bald eagle, fox squirrel and gopher tortoise may be seen along with white-tailed deer, wild turkey, rabbit and gray squirrel.Since the Withlacoochee State Forest is one of the few places in Central Florida that offers at least some modest terrain, this is an excellent spot for Floridians to get some miles in and check out gear when training for thru-hiking the AT, PCT etc.. Limited water sources. Plan ahead. Also research Hunting seasons since this is popular open country for hunters.
